Humility
The dungeon of Hythloth is the old sewers of the lost city
of New Magincia. You'll have to navigate its dark, dank passages to find the
means of restoring Humility to the land. Beware the poisonous waters that fill
the passages on your quest for the Glyph of Pride.
- Walk straight ahead until and you'll pass a staircase on your right. Still
in the water, continue around the bend and you'll come to a statue on a pedestal.
The positioning of the Statue is a clue to how you'll solve this dungeon's
puzzles. Head back up the stairs and enter the sewer tunnels. This level is
rather dark, and I recommend turning your monitor's brightness up a bit. Or
you can go the hard-core gamer way and use the "Light" spell. ;) This dungeon
also has a good amount of reagents to stock up on; especially spider silk.
The Warhammer you got from the Goblin Leader works really well against the
arachnids that heavily infest this area.
- You'll come to a branch in the tunnels. Turn right and enter the room with
a spider web covering a pool of water. Destroy the web and go down in the
water. There's a valve at water level along the north wall that you need to
turn. This will lower a platform in another room. There's also a yellow potion
on the other side of the stairs if you need it. Get up out of the water and
look along the east wall for a gold colored brick. This will open a wall that
leads around to a chest with the Green Statue and some goodies.
Beware the spiders.
- Head back down the tunnel and take the opposite path at the branch to a
large open room filled with poisonous swamp water. Destroy the webs along
the way and watch for more spiders attacking you. (In an outlet tunnel
to your South along this tunnel, there's a VERY hard to see gold ring you
can take. It's worth a good 100 gold. See picture below.)
- You'll have to brave the swamp water to get to where you need to go. If
you can brave it longer than just getting to the lowered platform, though,
you can get the Swamp Boots which will make you immune to
the poisonous water. A MUCH needed advantage for a later situation in this
level. There are also some nasty fish in this water which make it even more
fun. IMMEDIATELY drink the red potion on the ledge with the swamp boots. Your
health is almost guaranteed to be all green, so you'll be needing it badly.
This is a good vantage point to pick off those fish. Take the Swamp Boots
from the chest in the corner and swim back out to the small, circular platform.
'C'limb up onto the platform and it'll rise automatically. The chest in the
other corner just has a Light Scroll.
- The platform will take you up to a small room with a Yellow Pedestal (used
later) and a lever on the East Wall. Pull the lever to open the gate back
near the beginning of the sewer tunnels. Ride the platform back down and go
to the newly opened passageway.
- Destroy the web still blocking the passage and head North and up the ramp.
Take a left and follow the passage around to a small room with a hole in the
middle. Drop down into the hole and you'll land in some water. I hope you
got those Swamp Boots, cause this water isn't pleasant. Swim down and take
the Red Statue and turn the valve next to it to raise the
water level so you can swim back out to the top and 'C'limb out.
- Head back out to the passageways and continue straight across (East) to
a large room with a grate in the middle. There are some chain leggings in
the middle. As soon as you enter, both portcullises will close on you. Take
the chain leggings and the walls will start to close in on you. Don't panic!
Just go stand by the West portcullis and just as the walls are about to squish
you, it opens and you can slip out.
- Turn right (the only way not blocked) and you'll come to a small room very
similar to the beginning of this level. Destroy the web, drop down in the
water, and turn the valve to open the East portcullis back at the intersection.
Climb out and head back there.
- Pass through the first room and enter another one filled with stone columns
rising out of a water filled room. You have to jump from column to column
in a specific order to reach your goal. I've labelled the path on the picture
below. There are actually two different patterns I've noticed. You'll know
the one to follow if the column you're supposed to jump to isn't there. (If
someone finds another pattern, ICQ me.) The green numbers are the extra
jumps you may have to take after #5. They're in curly braces for my literal
directions. (For those of you still using a text browser, the path, starting
with the first jump, is East, East, Southeast, Southwest, South, {West, East,}
Northeast, Northeast). If you fall in the water, the columns reset. I recommend
waiting until the columns stop moving before jumping to the next one. It's
a bit buggy about following the right path and taking your time. The last
jump takes some really good aiming to get up onto the column with the Green
Pedestal. Place the green statue on the green pedestal, and watch
the special effects. A portcullis somewhere else in the dungeon will open.
Turn the right valve on the wall to open the portcullis all the way back at
the intersection. The left valve opens the portcullis in the current room.
This room contains some spiders and a chest with assorted goodies.
- Head back out to the intersection with the passage to the crushing-walls
room. Take the newly opened Northern passage and you'll come to a large room
with some red water below. Around the slight bend is a chest with the Blue
Statue and some gold and potions.
- Head back through the crushing-walls room and turn north at the intersection.
You'll come to a room with some rats and the Red Pedestal.
Drop the red statue off to open another portcullis to the exit. Continue out
the North doorway of this room and turn right at the "T" in the passage. You'll
come to another large room filled with red water. There's a valve just to
the right of the doorway. Turn it to lower the water and grab the Yellow
Statue. There's nothing but a yellow potion on the other side of
the water, and a red potion in the SE corner.
- Heading out the room with the Yellow Statue, head straight West. At the
intersection, you'll find a Binding Pentagram in the South
room and the Blue Pedestal in the northern one. There's a
spinning dart that shoots at you when you enter, and it's hard to avoid. Just
use one of the tons of yellow potions scattered about if you get hit. Place
the Blue Statue to open the third main portcullis.
- Exit the room and continue West and you'll come to a very large, open room
being guarded by a Wyrmguard. Dispatch him quickly (just smack him while he's
taunting you before he even has a chance to attack) and now you'll have to
make your way across the platforms to the base of the Guardian's Column.
The easiest way to manage the platforms is to jump as far as you can then
swim to the next one and climb out. There are a ton of fish in this pool of
water. Just concentrate on killing the ones near the Column. 'T'argeting them
and using Lightning is the easiest way. You'll have to swim around the back
of the Column and dive underwater to enter it. Grab the Glyph of Pride
and exit the large room.
- Now, retrace your steps all the way back to the room where you got your
Swamp Boots. Ride the platform up and place the Yellow Statue on the Yellow
Pedestal to open the final portcullis to the Dungeon's (almost) exit.
The platform raises and lowers randomly on its own, so if it's not there when
you first arrive, just wait a few seconds.
- Head back to the room where you got the Blue Statue (from the above room,
go north at first intersection near Dungeon entrance, East at next intersection
through the crushing-walls room, and north at the next intersection). Head
through the doorway just after where the chest you got the statue from is.
There's a quick turn to the East that was previously blocked. Placing all
for Colored Statues opened this passageway up.
- You'll eventually enter a section of the dungeon with Clear Walls
that let you look out into the Sea. At the first branch (where you can see
a chest through the wall up high), turn East. At the next branch, turn East
again. You'll come to a spot with a chest and you can see a key through the
wall. Just walk around to get the key. The chest contains a Purple Statue
and some potions.
- From the purple statue chest, head back out and follow the passage around
to the north where you'll come to a blocked section. Turn south and open the
chest with the key and use the winch to open the portcullis.
- Go through the now open passage and you'll return to a normal, stone dungeon
area. At the first turn West, enter the room and step on the teleporter. You'll
be teleported to a small room with water below. Dive down and swim around
to the South and you'll hit an area transition point. After that, look up
and you'll see a way out. Swim up and out of the Dungeon.
- So what's the Purple Statue for? And what was that Orange
Pedestal and extra rooms at the end? Well in the interest of saving a lot
of hair pulling and stress, the developers put a nice bypass to the entire
last section of Hythloth. The rest of the Dungeon consists of a convoluted
valve puzzle where you have to turn 8 valves in the right order 2 different
times to access the other pedestals and statues, and eventually end up the
same place the teleporter takes you to. There are supposedly some more minor
treasures back in this area, too, but there's nothing spectacular back there
that I've heard. I never figured out the valve puzzle myself, and if anyone
has an easy-to-follow solution, and info on what treasures are in the extra
area, I'd really appreciate an ICQ message.
- Cleanse the Shrine in the same manner you did
the first time and take your stat bonus. I recommend Dexterity or Strength
(whichever is less) this time. Again, you don't know too many useful spells
yet to warrant the Mana bonus, and this will allow you to learn some more
combat moves if you picked Dexterity or give you a nice Hit Point bonus if
you chose Strength. Talk to Katrina and you'll see her attitude has changed
to a more Humble one. If you've got any 2nd Circle Spell Scrolls and the needed
reagents, use the Binding Circle on the shore to learn a few more spells.
Return to Buccaneer's Den to collect your reward from Samhayne. You're in
for a nasty surprise, though...
